hello there everybody, I’m here to start a discussion, recently i got to a point in the survival game I’m making where the question of whether or not to make the ui for things like player health, hunger etc came to mind. i originally thought that I would wait until I got say 20% in to do the ui, so as anyone who felt conflicted has likely done, I went for a walk and sat there thinking, that’s when another question came to mind

“when is the right time to start thinking about designing UI?”

so I thought id ask here to see your opinions were.

Honestly I think all the time lol. I like to plan as much as I can out before game creation, so I would probably sketch up at least something for the UI before making anything. Then when making the game you may change the UI design/positioning depending on your other art and functionality in game. So yeah I guess it is really just a matter of personal preference.

I agree with HunGARE that it’s mostly personal preference.
Sometimes, if the UI isn’t an important feature in a game I’m working on, then I’ll wait until the game is 90% complete, but also, if it plays a BIG part of the gameplay tone, then I’ll get to work on it as soon as possible.

One thing I do highly encourage though is to actually sit down with pen and paper (or charcoal and cave wall, etc.) and actually draw out a few sketches of what you want the final design to look like. You could call this a prototype.

Knowing exactly what I want the final result to be really helps me to design it from the foundation up and effectively create it in Unity.
