With the new release of Unity 5 comes a new type of license called “Personal Edition“. 😀
This new type of license is completely free and contains all the useful features that the PRO license offered back in Unity 4. For example:
- The Profiler Tool
- LOD Support
- Occlusion Culling
- Full-Screen Post-Processing Effects
- And much more.
If you did not earn/receive more than $100,000 in revenue/funding in the last fiscal year, you meet with the requirements for the use of the Personal Edition License.
So, you may be asking what’s the point of buying the PRO version of Unity 5 instead of using the new Personal Edition version…
Well, the PRO version now ships with NEW benefits like:
- Customizable Splash Screen
- Dark Editor Skin
- Team License
- Real Time Global Illumination
- Physically Based Shading
- HDR
- Premium Support
With this move from Unity it seems like the PRO version is intended for professional users, allowing the starting indie developers to take advantage of the Personal Edition to grow on the industry.
Here are some frequently asked questions:
- –Can I deploy on iOS and Android using the Personal Edition?
–Yes you can.
- –I pre-ordered Unity 5 PRO, but now I want to use the Personal Edition instead, could I get a refund?
–To qualify for a refund, you must be able to attest that you have not had revenue or received funding in excess of US$100,000 in the previous fiscal year as set forth in the Software License Agreement.
The deadline to apply for a refund is May 1, 2015.
If you have some other questions about the new type of license, please head over the FAQ page on the unity website.
