Hey guys. So I am planning on diving in to game dev a lot more and maybe doing some freelancing work. One thing that has been concerning me is the protection of my work, as I don’t want my work to get stolen. I have been thinking about it, and I think I generally know what I should do to protect my work, but I need a second opinion as I might be missing something.

Games- Uploaded to website

Music- Youtube/Soundcloud

Scripts- Assets Store

Artwork (2D) – Deviant Art/Watermarks

Artwork (3D) – Deviant Art/Assets Store/Watermarks

So this is probably my plan for the future for protecting my work, I just want to know if there are any other precautions to take in order to protect my work. Thanks for reading.

Well you already have Copyright on your work so if you can prove it’s yours it really is yours.

On anything you create (at least in the EU and US) you have copyright, so that part is covered.
Actually detecting infringement on it and taking steps to protect your copyright is the difficult part. Especially with code.
If you’re really serious about this, then you might want to speak with a local lawyer about it.

You always have copyright of your own work. I think you are confusing it with trademarks.

Canadian Intellectual Property Office

Poems, paintings, plays, stories, songs, software—all are creative works worth protecting.

Generally, your original work is automatically protected by copyright when you create it. However, when you register your copyright, you get a certificate of registration that you can use in court as evidence that you own the protected work.

I found this on the official website of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

Maybe it’s different in US, but it works like that in Canada.

That certificate is proof that you have copyright indeed.
But you don’t need it, though it’s easier to proof your right in court with it.

You dont need it but it stills a good idea. Personnally I prefer to buy a copyright instead of trying to protect my work via websites.Never know what can happen……
