Does anyone feel like their lack of artistic ability discourages them from making games?

About 4-5 years ago, I had a huge passion for programming and making games. Since then, I’ve sort of fallen out of that loop but have slowly found myself gaining interest again. I always felt the biggest thing holding me back was my artistic ability. I could always figure out the programming part but the art part always left me feeling hopeless which slowly made me lose interest. I feel so limited in what I can do without some decent artwork.

My other big struggle  that I’ve always had, was coming up with ideas for games. Everything seems so out of reach that I’m never really sure what to do. Like I have a craving right now to program and make something really cool, I just have no idea what to make :/

I understand, I’ve never been very artistic, so I rarely actually finish any game I start to make. The exception being game-jams. But lately I’ve found myself not trying to make games, but just make a feature of one. If I run out of motivation, no big deal, but if I’m super proud of what I made, I’ll usually keep building off of it until a game is formed.

So try that, pick a game you already like, and try to recreate 1 mechanic from it. If you like what you made, try to make something else for it, and so on.

And if after so long you run out of motivation for it, you at least have the mechanic ready to go when you want to use it in another game.

Well, I have exactly your skills. I am capable of programming, but my art/modelling is just crap.

Nevertheless, I create games with the help of other artists, which provides their models for free. I download models from sketchfab and turbosquid to compensate my lacking skills.

If you’re lacking of game ideas, I can tell you that I have a lot of game ideas. You just have to tell me what your favourite game genre is.
